This course is designed to introduce the basic concepts of the design of digital circuits, using both digital and analog techniques, and to illustrate these concepts with practical examples. Students will gain familiarity with a variety of digital computing circuits including: S-R, D-flip, D-flop, and counters. For extra credit, a student may be allowed to complete the Final Projects assignment which details how to integrate multiple digital components into one circuit. Students will gain experience designing circuits for a micro-controller, and a student may be allowed to complete the device-level project. In addition, the course has included practical examples of the design of digital circuits by providing programming assignments to analyze the source code of a digital circuit that is constructed from predefined components and to create a new circuit from scratch, either using hardware description language (HDL) or electronic schematic language. Students may be allowed to complete the lab project, which is to design and implement a simplified but functional digital circuit using synthesis techniques. Finally, all students are provided with a course-specific text book, “Principles of Chip Design” by David A. Patterson and John L. Hennessy, which is required. (Amazon.com: A Press Text.) 7211a4ac4a
